Raag Yaman — রাগ: ইমন

Key Characteristics

  1. Uses Teevra (sharp) Madhyam — this is the most distinctive feature of Yaman
  2. All other notes are natural (shuddha)
  3. Gandhar is the vadi — it is emphasised and returns to frequently
  4. Nishad is the samvadi — used prominently in the lower octave
  5. The raga begins on Nishad (Ni) in the lower octave, not Sa
  6. Characteristic phrases: N–R–G and K–Dh–N
  7. Gandhar is often approached via a delicate slide from Re
  8. Ascending passages emphasise Ga and Ni
  9. Pancham (Pa) is used but not dwelt upon in ascent
  10. Meend (glides) between Ni–Re–Ga are a hallmark of this raga

Emotional Character

Yaman's emotional essence centres on devotion and reverence. Historically employed in dhrupad and dhamar traditions, it was a favourite vehicle for Tagore's bhakti (devotional) compositions. While rooted in devotional sentiment, the raga also incorporates elements of pathos and valour, giving it remarkable emotional breadth and making it suitable for a wide range of compositions.

Tips for Practice

  • Begin alap (improvisation) in the lower octave, starting on Nishad
  • Spend time on the Gandhar — let it ring with meend from Re
  • Practice the Teevra Madhyam carefully — it must not flatten into shuddha Ma
  • Listen to recordings of Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, and Pt. Bhimsen Joshi performing Yaman
  • For bansuri players: use E-natural bansuri (key of E) for comfortable Yaman practice
